celebrate the children in our community. |

| |
Jamaica Day is a celebration of good news from all local communities, it is a day
where everyone can come together and celebrate the children of our community, the
future generation and praise them for their achievements.
‘Jamaica Day’ does not mean that if you are not of a Jamaican heritage
you are not allowed to attend; the event is open to everyone. The Jamaica Day festival
showcases and promotes opportunity, access and achievement within the community.

Who
cares for the carers? |
Two million people in Britain become
carers every year. Holly Gosling meets the people who care for them.

Carers’ unpaid contribution to the economy is estimated to be £87 billion, the same
cost to run the NHS, so why aren’t we appreciating their work more?
Within the North West there are approximately 725,000 carers, and they need help.

Prevention
is better than cure |
| |
For many years Old Trafford has a
reputation for crime and gangs, but things are
looking up. Aveline Eoga talks to
the prevention team to find out what's on ofer for the next generation. Photos

When we hear the words ‘prevention’ associated with youth offending, Angela Ormesher
says the immediate reaction is ‘’my child is not an offender or is not going to
be one, so it is a very delicate subject and we have to be careful how we word and
approach it’’.

BREAK IN PROCEEDINGS |

What are the police burglary
team doing to keep us safe? Sana Mehmood went out on patrol with the squad
to find out. |
| |
People drinking coffee, sitting around talking – this is not what I expected a police
station to be like!
But the burglary team has just come back from attending a call, the atmosphere is
lively and relaxed and not at all how police or their offices are portrayed on the
telly. There I met PC Duncan Gumbs who completely changed my perception of the police
and its officers. |

The Gold Marquee set within the grounds of Old Trafford’s Lancashire County Cricket
Club was the ideal venue for the North West’s first ever African and Caribbean wedding
fair. The gloriously sunny day provided the perfect backdrop – reminiscent of a
beach in the Caribbean – and despite the scorching heat, people turned up in their
hundreds to see this wonderful show.

There is no room for slacking and lazing about at my camp,” says Mark McGuiness,
“If you
want to become a member you have to take on board the rules. There are far too many
young people sitting at home on their Xbox and PlayStation and not thinking of their
health.”

Careering
out of control |
Whatever our age many of us still wonder what we want to be when we grow up.
Eman Irhouma talks to leading career psychologist Donna dunning. Illustration

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? This question is often carried from
childhood to adulthood without a certain answer. Who knows where life could lead
you? However old you are, you could still live your dream to be a grave digger,
a cow hoof trimmer, or even a crocodile wrangler.
