St John’s harmony singing workshops are more about having fun than hitting the right
notes.
By Anita Ward. |

Imagine the scene: Ayres Road on a cold December night. All is quiet. Then a strange
sound fills the air - loud voices singing energetically in a strange language. Drunken
carollers, maybe? No, St John’s Singers, belting out a traditional reindeer ‘yoiking’
song from Finland.

Where are our Christmas decorations? |
|

Christmas is here again. If you walk around Old Trafford, however, you might
not feel it. There are no Christmas lights hanging from the lamp-posts or even a Christmas tree.

There are believed to be over a thousand destitute asylum seekers living in Manchester.
These people are fleeing persecution, torture or death. Some people’s homes have
been destroyed and they have left lands full of misery, hunger, sickness and appalling
human rights. Despite efforts to deport more people, the number of destitute asylum
seekers ... |

Helping

From social events to educational classes, there’s more going on in our local churches
than you might think. By Sam Parker

There is no need to feel out of touch with your community, even if you don’t know many people in it. Sometimes life tires us, due to illness or debt worries or unemployment,
for example, we may feel that we are alone or need a boost to help us through our
personal difficulties. There is nothing worse than feeling lonely or out of contact
with life. In Old Trafford there are ... |

The
Traff-X Factor |

It might not look much from the outside, but the Traff-X Centre is one of Old Trafford’s
hidden gems. Founder Kevin Morris lets Mischa Wilmers in on the secret. Photos by

I am puzzled. The building before me looks more like a run-down warehouse than a
community centre. But when I enter the Traff-X centre, home to Mr M’s Fight Factory,
the gym founded by self-defence and break dancing expert Kevin Morris, I am immediately
struck by the engaging warmth and colour of the inside. There is a huge,
